This event was organised through the Project Fear Team and Robert (guide for Mercat Tours)
I have no previous knowledge of information on this venue in terms of names and any specific links, with the exception of a character named “Mr. Boots”. I was to learn a lot more by the end of the morning after the vigils had ceased when Robert, our guide, took us back to revisit each room/area advising what had gone before…
Average temperature in the caves is between 10-12 degrees at any one time.
WHITE ROOM
I decided to position myself at the rear of this cave like room in the left corner, as you walk into the room. Unbeknown to me at the time this, apparently, is a spot where people on previous vigils have experienced things e.g. smell of whiskey around their face to name but one instance. This was not witnessed by me personally. The only thing I experienced in this room was the occasional draft and dip in temperature, especially from the kneecap area downwards.
When listening to the Dictaphone recordings there was what appeared to be the word “help” – was this possible EVP? Could it possibly have been something high pitched which sounded like this word? There was nothing that would make this type of sound in the room at the time… What was it? I do not know…
Some time later in the same room, we were told by Robert (our guide) that “…this person does not want you here” also “… this person does react to provocation” – but he did not reveal any names or further information at this stage as to who did not want us there...
One member in our group came up with the name “Kirk”. I linked in with a name of James (Duxford) and was asked by Robert - “why’s that?”. I could not explain this, other than the name just appeared in my mind. This is quite strange for me as I do not normally experience anything like this.
I also picked up on what I can only describe as a soap smell, possibly carbolic?
Various people were experiencing temperature differences in this room - a draft coming across their hands and faces.
Another sound picked on the Dictaphone can only be likened to a “chink” link sound. Could this perhaps have been a sound made from a camcorder being used? I have to say that this particular sound did not quite sound as loud as that…
Temperature reading is 14 degrees, but it feels a lot colder than this. A short while later in this room the temperature dips to 12.5 degrees.

CARETAKER’S ROOM
I move out of the White Room into this room for a while. I would point out to anyone visiting Blair Street Vaults that if you are taking pictures from the entrance to this room and occasionally when you are in the room, the sound from the camera/flash appears to reverberate around the room, the only way I can describe this is to a ping type of sound. It is a strange sound to hear if you are unaware of the acoustics, so be aware of this!
Just stepping into the room I felt very uneasy. I did not like this room but could not explain why. I knew I did not want to be in there, but continued regardless. The crystal seemed to be making movements insofar as questions being asked (yes/no answers – yes being depicted by a clockwise motion, no being depicted by an anti-clockwise motion). Questions were conducted by silent commentary. I asked whether any presence was there, yes. I went through the adult male, adult female, boy, girl, animal questions – male and boy were the only yes responses. I also asked the same questions in the corridor area outside this and the White Room. The same responses appeared to be coming through. Apart from this and a temperature fluctuation, nothing else really happened.
After being in this room for some time, I decided move into the corridor area and back towards the White Room. There was a sound heard by the majority of our team – someone likened it to an owl hoot, although this was not the source of this sound. We do not know what had caused it. There was nothing obvious that would make that sound… The question was asked for another sign if this had been something present with us, but nothing was forthcoming and the sound not heard again.
Paranormal Kingdom were videoing the corridor area and had picked up some orbs moving along and around the bottom area of the corridor, in the area of the Caretaker’s room and wine cellar. I was now back in the area near the Caretaker’s room and felt as though something was around me. Nothing was apparent to confirm this effect, but it was just a feeling… I am sure those who have been on a vigil here will know exactly what I mean…
DOUBLE HEIGHT ROOM AND TAVERN ROOM
Nothing really experienced in the double height room or tavern room by me personally. The temperature reading registers at 10 degrees, although it feels more like 2! There is a sound captured on the Dictaphone which resembles a dog barking – this is captured on 2 occasions. What caused this? I do not know… I believe Paranormal Kingdom may well have a similar sound captured. I would like to point out here that it does not sound like someone coughing… Later on during this part of the vigil someone in the group does make coughing sounds, but this does not resemble the sounds caught on the Dictaphone previously mentioned…

LONG CORRIDOR (OFF THE TAVERN ROOM)
“Orbs” were being captured by Paranormal Kingdom on camcorder. It is cold and dark in this area with dripping water. Four of our group experienced back pain in the top area of our backs. This was experienced in the long corridor area – you walk into this area and turn immediately left, it was in this top area where this was experienced. On moving towards the middle of the corridor most people experiencing the back pain noticed it either disappeared or eased. Apparently the top area of this corridor where we had been standing in had been blocked off. I believe this had been, from what Rob was telling us, an old forge and perhaps the feeling of past presences was being projected onto us… Who knows for sure? I prefer to keep an open mind on this for now, but the reader is free to interpret such findings as they see fit.
Think the temperature recorded in here was 1.5 degrees, although I have to reiterate that this is a cold, very dark and wet corridor, so all these factors could very well contribute to this reading.
Rob said there was something apparent in the corridor and had been for about half an hour, he is “one of the frequent characters”.
A young girl was being sensed by one group member, along with a male in his 40/50’s.
SAFE ROOM
I now know this is what this room is known as. It was very muddy at the entrance – which was a bit gross. Apart from that, I didn’t personally pick up anything in this room other than the old temperature fluctuation.
Apparently, according to Rob at the end of the night vigil, an old cobbler has been experienced in this room. Allegedly he has not been seen of recent times, as it is thought that “Mr. Boots” has breached access to this room since excavation works and it is not now thought to be a “safe room”. Another alleged presence in this room, where the stones are piled up in the right hand corner is a lady, apparently in great distress. Such distress has apparently been sensed by others visiting the Vaults. I did not personally experience anything in here myself.
WINE CELLARS
A little boy referred to as "James" has been sensed in this area. The Mercat staff apparently take this as a warning that "Mr. Boots" is around. The latest trick that James has learnt, is to throw pebbles. Apparently one such pebble hit a guide on the cheek on a previous tour.
I did not personally experience anything in this area.
This room leads round to the corridor where the White Room and Caretaker's Room are located. Apparently in the Caretaker's Room, his dog is sensed. A Medium went into this area on a previous tour/vigil and did not like the feel of the room, sensing bodies... under the floor? This fact, however, is unknown - short of digging up the floor... The fireplace in this room has, in the past, made people feel that the room is extremely hot...
SÉANCE
Although I did not participate in the actual séance circle, I was in the room observing, as much as this was possible. Once the lights are out, you cannot see anything – apart from the odd camcorder light!
Apart from the feeling of being circled by something represented by a cold intermittent breeze coming around the circle and room generally, nothing actually happened.
The only thing I would mention is that towards the end of the séance I personally noticed what would appear to be a white moving light going across the séance circle. What this was I do not know. At that point there were no torches, cameras etc being used…
GENERAL NOTE/INFORMATION
"Mr. Boots" - Rob, our Mercat guide, thinks that this "character" could have been a landlord (in the loose sense of the word!) All he would say is that when the public were at street level, in times past, they had the protection of Police. However, once down in the Vaults, there was no protection... One possibility is that the Vaults were used as a brothel - not just adults but children too!
In addition to "James" being sensed, there is apparently a little girl who has occasionally been sensed.
Would I come back? Yes.
Recommendations? Definitely a camcorder – some impressive fast moving orbs…
