This vigil was organised by Derby Paranormal Hunters (DPH) and the owner of Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem.
Museum Room
Our individual vigil group began investigations at 01:20 a.m. and this consisted of Pat, David & myself. The main corridor is 21 degrees (this is the passageway leading from the Rock Lounge (where the cursed galleon is) to the Museum room). The Museum is 19 degrees.
We have the use of automatic writing equipment, which Pat and I decide to try. We asked out if anyone was in the room with us and asking if they could move the board for us - nothing happened initially. After a short while, Pat and I feel a draft around our legs. On taking a temperature reading around our legs, this registers 20 degrees. Looking at the door with the fire exit sign on it, we check for drafts. There is a slight draft at some points of the bottom of the door but not all, possibly explaining what we are feeling.
01:40 a.m. Nothing much is happening - (and there is nothing on my Dictaphone recordings when listening back after leaving the venue). We do hear some noises at the back of the room - (when you walk into the Museum go straight ahead to where the table is) – an electrical sound. As we are not too sure of our bearings in connection with other areas of the building we take it to be an electrical sound from machinery of some description. If could perhaps be something to do with the barrels being connected up? – a feasible and logical sound. Nothing registering on the EMF meter and the temperature remains constant. David picks up a cold spot of 17 degrees under the table area – my thermometer confirms the same reading. Again, this could be explained by the door drafts mentioned earlier.
David picks up an “orb” near the table area on his camera. Pat takes a picture and also appears to get an “orb” on one of the stools. On looking at the picture again, she puts her picture down to a mark on her camera. We then sit for quite a while but nothing happens.
Some time after this I ask if anyone has seen a flash of light in the corner of the room. (No-one was taking pictures at the time of seeing the flash). The only way I can describe this, is sometimes when you take a picture with a flash there is what I can only explain as a delayed reaction of the flash. This is how this was, but as mentioned, no pictures were being taken at the time and none of the other groups were near us. Temperature remains constant and nothing on the EMF meter.

The green arrow denotes "red orb". Again, this was not picked up until looking through the pictures after the vigil had ended...
Subsequent pictures taken in the same area by me do not reveal the "red orb"...
We all hear the same electrical sound as before. The temperature remains the same. The EMF meter has been moved into the corridor section to see if anything will be picked up – nothing registers.
After some time has passed, Pat takes some more pictures, one of which reveals an “orb” on my trouser leg. We all look at this picture and it shows an “orb” with some depth to it, not a transparent looking one. It also has a blue tinge to it – something which Pat says she gets with the camera she is using.
We try the automatic writing again. We ask for the instrument to move and if any spirit being is present, to write something. The instrument moves slightly. However, I should point out that the instrument is on castors, so it would move quite easily. Pat has her eyes closed during this experiment. She says that it felt like the instrument was moving slightly but was unsure if it actually had. I was watching the instrument and can confirm that it did move, ever so slightly – almost as if it had wobbled/rocked, nothing more than that though.
Heather joined us and picked up on a male presence. The message coming through was apparently for David. It is thought that it could be his grandfather. There was writing on the paper under the instrument, but nothing legible, mainly lines and loops.
We finish here and move to the next area.
Cellars
We began our vigil down here at 03:05 a.m.
When coming through the cellar door, you walk down a slight ramp, there are 3 main cellar areas housing a variety of barrels and other things. There is a cellar area to the left, centre and right. We took the left one first. The temperature here is 11-12 degrees. This area is very noisy, it is difficult to hear anything. I moved to stand in the passageway that we walked down to get to the left hand cellar. It is 10 degrees here. This is the main junction before you branch off to any of the cellar areas. Nothing happened in the left cellar.
The middle cellar is still 10 degrees, right cellar is 11 degrees and the left cellar is 12-13 degrees. The left cellar has two black pipes in the far corner that bend, near the fire exit and just above here to the right of the bend section as you look at it, there was a flash of light, (likened to that which bounces off a camera when a picture is being taken - no-one was taking photos in this area at the time the flash was seen). This happened at 03:25 a.m. Two pictures were subsequently taken after the flash occurred in this area, but nothing noted on the pictures.
We then move to the central cellar. Take a few pictures. It is quieter in this cellar, temperature registers at 9 degrees (…and it smells awful – probably from the ales in the barrels?) Temperature rises to 10 degrees. Nothing happened in this cellar.
Next was the right hand cellar, which is fairly quiet too. Long shot temperature taken in this area registers at 10 degrees. I felt very uneasy in this cellar section when first walking into this area. There is a large white panel – which I think it’s something to do with the barrels being connected up to the pub? (I’m not an expert in this field, so am unsure what this white panel actually is). This is the largest of the 3 cellar areas. In this right cellar, when you first walk into the main part of this area there are a set of stairs to your right. There is a cubby-hole near the top of the steps. This is very dark, there are some kind of electrical units in there (…and the crisps are stored here). Otherwise not much here apart from being used for general storage of items. The temperature remains at 10 degrees in most directions, including the stair area. One of the other groups have set up a trigger object here – they have placed one of the bin lids up, it is 11 degrees in this small section. This is still in an upright position. It also smells in here – perhaps a mould type of smell, perhaps smells from the barrels? Not too sure. Temperature remains at 11 degrees when leaving this area, the trigger object set up has not altered.
In the right hand cellar, there is a smaller cave indentation – this is where the bin trigger object was. David took some pictures in here and got what appears to be a face. Both Pat and I subsequently took photographs. Pat got the same and I eventually got the same, courtesy of Pat taking the photo. On examining the wall closer, there appears to be a painting or drawing of what appears to be the face captured on our cameras. This could perhaps be explained by the texture of the wall in this area and if it has mould or anything like that around it. It also goes a long way to explaining how photographs can be interpreted without further investigation as to its probable cause. We nicknamed this as our “Japanese man” picture…

When leaving this room, Pat and I witnessed what could only be described as a pipe tobacco smell. The smell was only slight and noticeable for a few seconds. David did not smell it. No-one was allowed to smoke during the investigation and we do not know what could have caused this…
On leaving our cellar vigil we spoke to one of the bar staff. I asked whether he personally or any of the staff working there had witnessed anything (specifically in the area where I felt uneasy) and if so, what they had experienced. He said that they do witness things down there, a lot of double takes and also at the top of the stairs there are a few double takes, staff have seen things etc.
Ward Room
Temperature is 18-19 degrees in here. Nothing happened in this room.
Yorkey's Room
This is where a table had been set up for table tipping. We did not use the same at this stage of the investigation. The temperature is 19-20 degrees. Not much happening here for us so we decide to have a tea break at 03:55 a.m.
Snug Room
Our vigil in this room began at 04:10 a.m. and ended around 05:20 a.m.
The temperature registers between 16-18 degrees. Initially, Pat picks up on her guide when we first use the glass. After this, the glass feels like it is pulsing – perhaps the pulses in our hands/fingers? David asked if the presence was his grandfather, which was met with a positive movement of the glass. On asking out if anyone else was in the room with us would the presence move the glass, the glass moved. On asking if this was a definite yes, then the glass should now stop moving. It did. The following question and answer session followed... (Be prepared, it was a very long session!)
Is it a person linked to someone at the table? No.

I ask for the spirit being to stop the glass moving and use our energy to touch Dave in some. The glass stops but nothing else happens.

Pat says she doesn’t know what else to ask. The glass moves. We are not sure why. I ask if that means there are no more messages for Pat? If that is the case can you bring the glass to me? No.

Pat says she is feeling cold again and the glass has now gone quite cold despite all 3 of us having our fingers on top of it. The glass moves quickly as she says this. Pat then says out loud that she can’t think of a question at the moment so… glass moves again.
Pat asks if the glass is cold because of you (spirit)? Yes.

Dave says he is feeling cold. Pat feels the area and confirms he is cold.
Are you affecting Dave at the moment? Yes. (sharp move).
Can you now do the same to Pat? Yes.
She can feel the cold breeze going around.
Is that you making the breeze around the glass? Yes.
Can you make it colder for us please? Yes.
The glass then proceeds to build up momentum by going around in a circle. I ask the glass to stop for the moment. It does.
Are you going to make this glass spin round as a sign you are here? If it is can you continue? Yes. Glass moves quite rapidly now.
I ask if it is, is this how you are going to make us jump? Glass moves more erratically.
Can you tip the glass for us? Continues moving fast in circular motion. Slows slightly for a short time, very brief. It has gone very cold again.
Is this how you are going to make us jump? If it is can you move the glass very quickly? Glass slows. Still very cold. Pat says she keeps thinking the glass is going to go over the edge there. Glass makes a sudden quick move.
We know you can move the glass and we know you can make it go cold, can you tip the glass at all for us? If it is yes can you bring the glass to me. I had to change my tape at this point and unfortunately cannot recall what the answer to this question was – not on my Dictaphone because of this reason.
Can you make the glass move very quick again? Yes. The glass speeds up again.
If you are able to tip it off the table, use our energy and try? Glass now a steady but constant speed. Pat now says she is getting really cold around her legs now. We stop the glass as we hear a beep noise (not a car beep). We do not know what it is, but wonder if it is anyone in the next room? We put it down to people in the next room but ask anyway if the beep noise we just heard was down to the spirit? If it is can the glass be brought to me. No response.
Pat then says “you’re joking”. I ask her what is wrong. Pat says “you can’t see this properly (due to lack of lighting etc) but the thermometer reading was 20 degrees and went down to 16 degrees”. My thermometer readings are 15-16 degrees around her legs. Dave records the same readings. I then ask out – can you see the little red light I am about to shine (indicating the thermometer red light beam). Glass moves very quick to the spot I have shone the light on.
This is what is known as a temperature gauge can you make it go cold again where the red light is? Glass moves quickly again.
Pat says she can feel a cold draft again over her hands. Glass moves rapidly again. Temperature readings dip to 15 degrees.
Pat asks if the spirit can make it cold for us please? It is very cold. I can feel you trying?
15 degrees.
Can you take it lower for me please? The glass is still moving.
Where that little red light is can you make it go cold again? Glass continues to move. Dave says he can now feel it around his legs. Pat says she can feel it too – and comments that it is so cold around her legs.
Can you bring the cold breeze up that is going around our legs and focus it on our faces please? Glass continues moving throughout all this questioning.
Where the little red light is, can you can make it go really cold there for us? Glass slows.
If it means stopping the glass, then do stop the glass if you need to focus.
16 degrees, 17 degrees. Are you taking the temperature up for us instead of down? Nothing happens.
Can you do something so that we can see? Make the temperature rise. Glass moves again. I know you are trying, thank you very much.
Pat suddenly jumps up – she has just been touched from behind where she was sat.
Is that what you were going to do for us as a surprise? Yes.
Can you do the same to either Dave or me please? Nothing happens.
Room is going cold again.
Pat asks for the spirit to touch me like it had done to her. Nothing happens.
Can you please touch David then please. Nothing happens.
Pat goes onto say that if we are expecting it, then it will not make us jump. Pat then asks if the spirit can pull on my hair – just a little tug, just so she can feel it – nothing happens.
Glass is picking up momentum again, not quite as quick as last time, but still quite fast. Temperature has gone from 16 to 14 degrees in a matter of seconds, then 15 degrees.
If you are moving around at the moment can you make the glass go quickly? Remains same speed.
Where are you right now? Can you take the glass to where you are for us? 14 degrees, 13 degrees. Glass moves towards the stool again.
Can you make either Dave or myself jump like you did with Pat? No response.
Is that a surprise? No response.
Are you going to make us wait? No response.
Are you going to spring it on us? No response.
Are you still there? Glass moves, but we are not sure of the reply.
If that means yes, can you bring the glass to me again please? No definite response. Dave has gone cold again.
Are you affecting Dave at the moment? Yes.
The temperature is 13 degrees at the stool.
Moving away from the stool the temperature is 15 degrees.
Are you still with us? Yes.
I’m now feeling very cold around my legs. Is that you? No response.
You’re not going to tell me are you? No response.
If it is no, can you take the glass to the stool? Yes.
Glass picks up momentum like before, the area where we are sat has gone cold again.
Pat asks if the spirit can touch me, can you touch her hair, pull her hair – not hard, just a little tug? Go on just like you did to me but to her hair. Nothing happens.
The glass is still moving quickly. Pat asks – can you touch her please? Nothing happens.
The glass is moving quicker now.
Can you make it go faster for us please? Yes – picks up even more speed now. The glass then slows to a stop. We say thank you. Glass moves slightly (almost as if we were to say you are welcome!).
Pat then asks if the spirit can show yourself as a light anomaly please, if you can? Just a flash of light where you are? Nothing happens.
Just show us a bit of your energy.
Can you see the stairs behind the stool where you are? No response.
Can you make the curtains move? No response.
Can you make the clock move for us please? No response.
If that is too difficult for you, can you move the glass to me please? No response.
Can your grandmother help you, if she can, can you move the glass to me please?
Are you making it go cold around my feet again? Glass moves – I say, I am not sure if that was yes or no and ask if it is yes, can you bring the glass to me again please? Nothing happens.
Are you still here with us? No response.
At this point we think the spirit presence has left us.
If you are still here with us, can you move the glass again, just to let us know you are here? No response.
"orb" in the Snug
We then sat and had a discussion. Pat asked – why should Dave’s granddad or somebody be here with us, or why should the little girl want to give me a message? Perhaps she is acting for someone else? All the same it is strange. You can see my point can’t you? Me – Yes. Pat then went onto say that it’s alright if you go to se a Medium, if you believe in it, that oh they’ll be there waiting because they’ve either got your turn to see that Medium or whatever to get the message across. But when you come into something like this, I just assumed that you’re going to pick up whatever is here. Me – not necessarily. If you have had people that have come here, for example, in the past that were happy with the place, then it might be a place that they like to come back to because they were happy here. Pat – that’s the type of person that I would expect to pick up that has something to do with the place, so why should they give you a message for you? Do you know what I am saying? Me – yes, I know what you are saying. I don’t personally know what this place was before it was a pub, back in its day. I don’t know what happened here, what it was used for? Pat – a travellers rest, the brewers used to brew whatever it was at the back there. Because this is where they used to brew the ale for the castle, the tunnels, the caves that we went through the other week came down to the side there and they had one coming off there that we couldn’t go down, which is where they used to bring all the beer barrels, beer and stuff up to go to the castle. So there are all underground caves. Down one part they have got it where they put the cannon in the wall, all slotted in the wall ready for firing. Yeah it’s full of caves. Me – so if it was a travellers rest, I suppose it could have been open to children being here with family etc.
Whilst talking, we notice that the room feels colder. We do discuss and point out though that dawn is approaching and the room would probably be getting cooler anyhow, the natural cool down process which buildings go through.
We discussed the glass speeds. It felt natural to us, not pushed. Pat said it was hard to keep up with it at times. You are trying not to put too much weight on it and I think that’s why it hurts your arms so much.
Yorkey's Room (revisited)
It was difficult to hear or pick up anything on the dictaphone because of the positioning of it in this room whilst using the table to extract answers from anything present.
However, some of the main points collected from this session were:
- we seemed to pick up on the presence of the little girl again in this room (we did achieve obtaining a christian and surname for this presence)
- on asking if the room was different to how the presence knew it to be in their time, we were met with a fast positive movement (this had been determined by our asking that if it was yes, for the table to be moved)
- Pat enquiried as to a shape being that resembling a pentagram
- apparently the presence was being protected from magic by her grandmother
- we, in turn, asked for confirmation of our own personal dates of birth (year, date and month) - this was achieved by asking numbers, months and years in no particular order and if the answer was yes, then to move the table. All 3 times on asking, the replies were correct (amazing really bearing in mind we did not know each other, divulge such information to each other, the organisers have no prior information in this respect... I will leave the reader to decide of that what they may!
- the presence kept trying to take us back towards the Snug
- on asking the presence "was the fireplace always here, if the answer is no, please do not move the table" - the answer was no. On following this up with staff at the Pub, apparently there was no fireplace in this room - it had been moved from somewhere else!
- Pat thought she had seen a sparkly white light near the bar area - we are not too sure what this could have been
- Unfortunately temperature readings could not be ascertained in this room from the dictaphone recording due to insufficient audibles - too far away from where we were conducting this part of the investigation
- There was a clock in the room which we were unaware worked, so when it chimed at 6 a.m. it made us all jump and laugh at the same time. We asked the presence whether they thought that had been funny - the table moved as a sign of yes...!
We were all extremely sceptical about a table with moving wheels, but the resulting information has been something to consider... along with it having a similar effect to the glass divination question and answer sessions previously held in the Snug room i.e. some very fast movements making it difficult to keep up with at some points and then some slower movements...
Would I recommend this venue? I think I can safely say yes. It seemed to deliver for our investigation anyway.
Would I go back? Yes.
Why? It would be interesting to see if the same or similar information resulted with different people...
